Normally 200-300 hrs is fine unless you are really revving the crap out of the bike. On the 250sx that i race in the dezert, i'm pretty intense on maintenance. I never go more than 150 hrs on a piston. in 25,000 hard offroad miles with 3 different bikes, I've yet to even look at a clutch plate.

Another big plus is besides the engine being extremely economical with fuel it also has long service intervals of 10,000 km, keeping running costs low. Chassis. Fuel tank. The KTM 690 SMC R features a 13.5 liter fuel tank which acts as a load-bearing part of the chassis, making it stiffer and gives the rider an optimal feel. Frame

KTM 890 Adventure Service Intervals. Overall, the KTM 890 Adventure has 9300 mile / 15000 km service intervals. At every service, change the oil and filter, and do a host of checks. The major service for the 890 Adventure is every 18600 miles or 30000 km, at which point you check the valve clearances and change the spark plugs.

The recommended brand is Motorex 4T. However, any good quality fully synthetic oil from a major company will work. Silkolene, Amsoil, Mobil 1, Shell Rotella, Motul, Valvolene and others have been used successfully. Just be certain you have a 15W-50 fully synthetic oil. Recommended oil change interval is 7,500 km. Some owners change earlier, at Don't remember the oil service changing much. The 1190's have more coolant, more oil, better cooling and KTM has about 12 years more knowledge to get that very extended service. It is also very difficult to run the 1190's as hard as a 990, you'd achieve orbit. No one is doing the full 9000 mile oil change interval on these, maybe 5000 mi. #6. Open the engine turning bolt cover with a coin or a fat screwdriver. 4. Remove the 4 valve cover screws. 5. Wiggle the valve cover out of the frame. 6. Use the engine turning bolt with a large socket to set the engine to TDC. 7. Do the valve work (measure using feeler gauges, remove rocker arms if adjustment is needed)

The only two major PITA’s are-. 1) The silver tab/ button on the hydraulic style fuel coupler (that contains the fuel screen) is positioned facing the air box so it’s hard to get to. I used a small but long screwdriver to reach in and depress the tab, uncoupling the fitting. 2) The very small screw that holds the metal/ rubber fuel line

I think the 15k service intervals, for environment . reasons . They use synthetic oil so can normally take more k's. but like was said some don't ride a lot of miles or Kilometres , so in that case every 12 months. if you do the miles quick , like say 30k per year 15k between service ok. D.
Manual says 9300 miles or every year. I won't put that many miles on it in a year so it's every Spring for me. Agreed!! I used to change mine about every 3k mi or so, though like JD said, when I start to feel a lack of smoothness too it's time. I completely didn't agree with the manual as I feel like it is toooooooo long in between changes
Hello fellow 690/701 enjoyers! This is my first season with my new SMCR 690. After looking extensively at the manual and online, I can’t seem to find a clear answer to when I should be changing motor oil, just the generic 10,000km service interval which I’m guessing is where the bike needs to be broken down for valve adjustment, etc.

DaveNZ. 839 posts · Joined 2020. #2 · Jul 22, 2020. I did my own oil change in my GT at 36,000kms, the original oil looked fine, still clean. I made up a tool to remove the fork cap. removed the forks, drained and measured oil in each leg, then refilled. I used Motorex 5W.
its either the 690/701 or the smaller ds bikes that fit what you describe. the wr250r klx 300 and crf 300l have long service intervals but will leave you wanting for power on the highway. they can do highway but youll want more power. the 450rl wont co,pare at all on the road to 690/701. #2.
My last oil and filter change was exactly one year ago. I am using Motul 300V 4T 15W-50 in this bike. I currently have only 1200 miles on this oil. I ride the bike at least 60-70 miles every time I take it out, so the oil always reaches the full operating temperature. Now, the owner's manual says to change the oil at least once a year.
KTM 1190 Adventure Service Intervals. Like many KTM liquid-cooled V-twins, the KTM 1190 Adventure and Adventure R have 9300 mile / 15000 km service intervals, at which point KTM wants you to change the oil and oil filter and do a host of checks. The intervals are quite wide and it makes for a great long-distance adventurer.
Looks like the new engine has a few modifications other than the longer stroke. If you look at this pic its a bit blurry but there is a tube coming out of the filtr cover so there are some changes to the lubrication system, possibly more oil into the head which is how they can extend the valve servicing intervals
